Yeast medications

Medications to treat yeast infections are called Azoles.
Pharmacist

Examples are fluconazole (Prescription tablets), miconazole, clotrimazole, tioconazole, ketoconazole.

Of these, miconazole, clotrimazole and tioconazole are available as over the counter yeast medications.

Any of these will work just as good. To make a good decision, let's take a look at the questions you may want to ask yourself.

Is this your first yeast infection?
Pharmacist

This assumes you have never experienced a yeast infection before.

Yes?
Better to see a doctor or seek urgent care.
Pharmacist

You should only continue if a doctor told you what to look out for as a sign of a yeast infection

Example if you are taking antibiotics.

Do you mind a burning sensation caused by OTC creams or ovules?
Pharmacist

OTC yeast medications can cause a burning sensation.

Yes?
Then seek urgent care or call the doctor.
Pharmacist

You will need to take the tablets. This require a prescription.

If you are already very irritated, very itchy and experiencing pain from the yeast infection, over the counter creams or ovules will make the feeling worse initially before it gets better.

Anyway, people react to these creams, ovules or suppository differently. If you've tried them before and experienced no problems, you may continue.

OTC yeast medications can leak and be messy.
Pharmacist

Is this a problem for you?

Yes?
Then find the time to see a doctor or urgent care.
Pharmacist

You will need the tablets which is a prescription.

Alright.
Assuming you've made up your mind to use OTC medication.

Pharmacist

Is using this every day for a week a problem for you?

Even if it gets much better?

Yes?
Then you may want to get the 1-day or 3-day pack.
Pharmacist

These are more expensive, because you are paying for the convenience.

The 1-day is more expensive and concentrated than the 3-day which is more expensive and concentrated than the 7-day.

Is staying away from sex the next one week a problem for you?
Pharmacist

Yes?
Then get the 1-day or 3-day pack.
Pharmacist

You cannot use the creams and have sex not even with a condom. It would reduce the effectiveness.

Know that 1-day doesn't mean you will get cured in one day. It will still take up to 7 days for complete relief.

Okay, those are the pros for the 1-day.
Pharmacist

Are you already very irritated and sore?

Yes?
Stay away from the 1-day treatment.
Pharmacist

This is a highly concentrated form of the medication. It will further irritate the vagina leading to a burning and painful sensation.

Do you have a yeast infection because of antibiotics you took?
Pharmacist

Yes?
Go with the 3-day or 7-day.
Pharmacist

You will want to gradually take care of this while recovering from the effect of the antibiotic.

Did you experience a burning sensation the last time you used an OTC yeast cream or ovule?
Pharmacist

Yes?
May want to stay away from the 1-day treatment.
Pharmacist

Will cause more burning than the 3 or 7-day treatments.

Brand or generic. Which should you choose?
Pharmacist

Would you like to know?

Yes?
Well, anything that use a medication delivery method, we recommend the brand.
Pharmacist

Store brands save money by using a cheap delivery method.

You may open a prefilled applicator, and have a mess on your hand.

Some manufacturers offer savings coupon which will  bring the cost down to almost store brand level.

See a manufacturer's website for savings coupon.

If getting the store brand for financial reasons, make sure the store will take it back if there is a mess on your hand.

Like to know which is better among the different ingredients?
Pharmacist

Over the counter creams or ovules for yeast infection include the active ingredients miconazole, clotrimazole, tioconazole.

Yes?
They are all equally effective.
Pharmacist

Miconazole
This can be used in different strengths giving you more options of number of days or dosage forms.

But 3-day offer more options of prefilled cream, suppository or ovule.

Tioconazole
Only available as an ointment in a single dose.

Clotrimazole
Available as 2% cream for 3-day and 1% for 7-day.

Here are a few things to consider below.
Pharmacist

--- If cost is not a factor, choose the 3-day.

--- If convenience is a factor, choose the 1-day ointment (tioconazole). Except you've used the 1-day ovule before and did not experience any burning or you are not very irritated.

--- Should you decide to get the 7-day, must choose prefilled applicators.

--- If no external itching, no need for the external cream. Save money.

Can get messy. Get the prefilled for ease of use.
May stick with the 7 day for reduced burning. High concentrations more likely to burn.
These come in high doses of tioconazole 6.5% for a one time use. May cause burning if already irritated. Better in early stages.
Forms a thin liquid after melting which can leak. Better nighttime, though manufacturers say day or night. Daytime use may cause leakage due to activity. If daytime, use with a pad but do not use a tampon because it will absorb the drug.
When inserted, it stays in one place while melting to release the medication. This can irritate that particular area and set up a chain of painful sensation especially if it sits at an already irritated area.

Athletes' foot

Side by side comparison of athlete's foot medications won't be any use to you.
Pharmacist

Answering a few questions would serve you better
Let's do that

Are you looking for something that will work the fastest?
Pharmacist

Yes?
Then get something with terbinafine.
Pharmacist

You should get relief within a week.

But to make sure it doesn't come back, you should continue using it for at least 1 more week after the skin surface has cleared.

Is this athletes foot also on the bottom or side of the foot?
Pharmacist

Yes?
Then go with clotrimazole.
Pharmacist

Expand some more.

Cream, gel or powder. Like to know what to get?
Pharmacist

Yes?
This will depend on the nature of the affected area.
Pharmacist

Expand some more

Is the affected area wet or moist?
Pharmacist

In other words, do you have sweaty feet?

Yes?
Get the powder.
Pharmacist

Gold bond foot powder + lamisil or tinactin foot powder or lotrimin foot powder.

Use domeboro packets in water if the foot is soggy.

Do you see yourself having difficulty keeping the area dry?
Pharmacist

May be you are an athlete or work in humid temperatures and so on.

Yes?
Get the powder.
Pharmacist

The powders or powder sprays dries out the feet past the point of what any towel can do while also showing antifungal effect.

Is the affected area very itchy, sore and inflammed?
Pharmacist

Yes?
May want to add hydrocortisone 1% cream to the regimen.
Pharmacist

This will help stop the itch faster while taking care of the inflammation. But use the hydrocortisone cream for no more than 7 days. After 7 days, you can keep using the antifungal cream or powder without the hydrocortisone.

If you think the area is infected from scratching, add triple antibiotic cream to the mix.

Would you say the area is dry and scaly?
Pharmacist

Yes?
Get the cream, lotion or gel.
Pharmacist

These will keep the area moisturized making it easier to remove the dead skin cells.

Brand or generic cream or lotion. Like to know what to get?
Pharmacist

This assumes cost is not a factor for you and you just want to know if the generic will be just as effective.

Yes?
Stick with brand name.
Pharmacist

Store brands vary in effectiveness.

Know that when dealing with the skin, the quality of the inactive ingredients matters.

Some will help the cream penetrate the skin better or make the active ingredient last longer on the skin.

Some inactive ingredients in some store brand can even add to the problem by irritating the skin.

Some manufacturers do offer savings coupons on their websites.

OK. Hope that will help you decide on what to get.
