Cough Medications
Answer a few questions to compare OTC cough medications more efficiently.
This will assume you are comparing cough medications to see which would work best for you.
That is, you are not coughing up stuff?
Get a cough syrup with dextromethorphan as an active ingredient.
A feeling of heaviness on your chest?
You will need something to make the mucus thinner so you can spit it out.
A cough medicine with guaifenesin as an active ingredient would suffice.
This is an expectorant that will thin the mucus making it easier for you to cough it up and clear the breathing passages.
Be sure to drink a lot of water with this.
A cough syrup with dextromethorphan as an active ingredient will be good.
You will need a cough medication with Guaifenesin + dextrometorphan.
This will depend on the factors listed below.

If the cough keeps you up at night, get the 12 hour cough syrup or tablets.
With the regular acting (every 4 to 6 hours) cough syrups or tablets, you don't want the cough waking you up around 4 or 5 in the morning when the effects of the medication wears off.
Nothing as bad as starting your day with a morning cough. You will have a headache the rest of the day.
If you have a sore throat stay away from the maximum strength 12 hr tablets. These will be too big for you to swallow. The pills are big. Should you need a 12 hour cough relief tablet and you have a sore throat, stick with the regular strength. One tablet should do it for most people. But if you need the maximum strength dose, just take it twice.
Get these if your throat is also sore. Maybe from the coughing.
Cough drops will help soothe the throat and suppress the cough.
Also get cough drops if you are experiencing a tickly cough.
So many different types out there. We can help you with that.
You should get the cough drops with menthol as an active ingredient.
The higher the strength the better? May be. fisherman's friend contains 10 mg of menthol, Halls intense cool (15 mg menthol), ricola extra strength (8.3 mg menthol).
Bear in mind too that some are uniquely formulated blends. Like ricola.
Here is the deal, stay with the higher strength if you also have nasal congestion with this cough and soreness of the throat.
