Diphenhydramine

∗∗∗ WARNING ∗∗∗
Diphenhydramine is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.

Except directed by the pediatrician.

Why?

  • not FDA recommended.

  • may cause excitation in children.

  • impairs ability to perform activities requiring mental alertness.

  • impairs physical coordination.

  • child's reaction time will be delayed even if not drowsy.

  • may cause dry mouth.

Well said.

What if you have, say a 5 year old, who is:

  • having an allergic reaction (broke out in hives, rashes, itchy all over) and you think diphenhydramine will help with this allergic reaction

  • or the pediatrician told you to give diphenhydramine for one reason or another and expected you to get the direction from the box.

  • or your child is 5 years and 4 months?

What do you do? Estimate a dose?

No!

Let's get the dose here. All you need is the child's weight (lbs).

Now let's Continue
