Wax is a sticky liquid (not really wax) called cerumen that helps protect the ear canal by suppressing bacteria growth in the canal, trapping dirt and other small particles and even insects.
It should wash away along with the trapped debris naturally by jaw movements drying and falling out from the ear without you even knowing, but then again with wax, the build up may get hard and keep getting larger.
