What, where, when and how
to use this.
Let's see what is available for jock itch Over-The-Counter.
You will need an anti-fungal medication to apply on the area to kill this fungi infection.
The next goal will be to prevent secondary bacterial infection due to scratching and reduce any inflammation if present.
With this in mind, see what is suggested below.
The first choice will be the azole-type drugs such as clotrimazole, miconazole.
These are more effective against the possible mix of fungi that can cause jock itch should you want to cover all the bases.
Fungi like damp conditions, so get the powder or powder spray. But if you can keep the area dry, a cream or lotion should do.
Should you decide to go with the powder, look for the ones that use talc rather than corn starch as the inactive ingredient.
Fungi can feed on starch making it a little harder to get rid of. (A good example is zeasorb® powder).
Terbinafine, butenafine may work faster, but may be more expensive. Choose this if money is not your a problem. You will cut the healing time by almost 3 days.
Hydrocortisone 1%
Helps if it is very itchy, red and inflamed.
But do not use this alone as it may make it worse if the fungi is not being killed.
Do not use for more than 7 days. Continue to use the anti-fungal cream if relief is not complete after 7 days.
Improve airflow to the area. You can do this by:
Dry the area before you put on underwear. This is very important. You may have to use a hair dryer if need be.
A damp groin is an ideal area for fungi to grow.
