Of these, the approaches available over-the-counter are:
Let's use this information to choose a good over-the -counter remedy.
Obviously artificial tears will be part of your dry eye management.
It can be overwhelming looking at all the dry eyes drops on the shelves. Which should you get?
Let's take a look.
But before then, I encourage you to see how the tear film work by tapping on the "FYI" button below.
This will also make it easier for you to reach a good decision choosing a dry eye relief drops.
When you've digested this information, tap "Continue" to see how we can choose a good artificial tears drops.
This assumes you used the OSCDI index to analyze your dry eyes.
A good choice of artificial tears eye drops would be thicker or more viscous eye drops. They must be preservative free.
Disadvantage with thicker drops is blurring of the eye because they are more viscous.
Even when used at night, you may still experience blurred vision for up to an hour on waking up in the morning.
Anyway, if you have severe dry eyes, blurring effect is the last thing you want to worry about.
Also use 1 drop or 2 at the most. Anything more will cause sticky eyelids.
Give a brief description.
Make sure they are preservative-free.
Elaborate a little more.
Explain blepharitis.
These stabilize natural oils in the eye.
List examples of artificial tears containing oily ingredients.
Explain how the eyes may feel.
Stick with the gel and not the ointment. They are two different things.
A night time gel helps prevent erosion of the cornea while you sleep. Know that your eyes move around while you sleep.
A night time gel would help avoid a painful eye on waking.
Also the lacrimal glands that produce the watery layer of the tear film slows down while sleeping.
But if the preservative is not benzalkonium chloride, no difference between the dosage forms. Either one is fine.
This include lid scrub, warm compress, lid massage.
They help to improve the secretion and flow of oil from the meibomian glands thereby reducing the evaporation of your tears.
They also help to keep the eyelids healthy while preventing infections.
You can buy an eye compress or get a clean face cloth, run it under hot water and hold it on your eyes for about 5 minutes.
Try doing this before going to bed and on waking up in the morning.
Cold compress:
You don't have to go running to the drug store to get one. Just get a plastic sandwich ziplock bag, fill with water about 1/3 of the way, add 5 to 7 ice cubes, zip it shut and place over the eyes for relief.
Warm compress:
You don't have to run to the pharmacy to get this either. Run a face wash cloth under hot water and hold it on your closed eyes for up to 5 minutes. Should give you some relief.
