Toothache is usually caused by tooth decay, inflammation of the pulp or erupting wisdom tooth.

Bacteria that live in the mouth work on the sugars and carbs on the teeth to form a sticky plaque that sticks to the surface. With time, the acid in the plaque erodes the tooth's coating leading to tiny openings called cavities on the surface.

So the first sign of a decay may be a sensation when your child eat sweet, very cold or very hot stuff.
