Common questions regarding insect bites are:

  • Does this look like a mosquito bite?
  • Is this a spider bite to you?
  • I have no idea what bit my child. Can you tell?

Let's see what we can come up with regarding what bit your child.

When bitten, did your child feel an immediate pain...

...now the area is showing redness, wheal, flare?
Pharmacist

Yes?
Thinking fire ant bites.
Pharmacist

Symptoms and signs of a fire ant sting are immediate pain followed by a wheal and flare lesion.

When bitten, did he or she feel an immediate burning or transient pain?

With itching?
Pharmacist

Yes?
Suspecting honeybees, wasps, yellow jackets or hornets.
Pharmacist

Is the bite area red and swollen?

With induration (hardening) up to a few inch across?
Pharmacist

It is?
Suspecting honeybees, wasps, yellow jackets or hornets.
Pharmacist

The reactions are immediate burning, transient pain, and itching, with an area of redness, swelling and induration up to a few centimeters across.

Those were signs of being stung by a bee or wasp family.
Pharmacist

The reactions are usually immediate burning, transient pain, and itching, with an area of redness, swelling and induration up to a few inches across.

Swelling and redness usually peak at 48 hours, can last for a week and involve an entire part of the body like the arm, hand, neck or leg.

If this is or not the case with your child, let's continue and see what else we can come up with.

When bitten, did the child feel an intense throbbing and burning pain?

And now there is a red spotty rash?
Pharmacist

If very susceptible, may experience:

  • Swelling
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea.

Yes?
Probably rubbed or pressed against a Puss Moth caterpillar.
Pharmacist

Tap on the "FYI" button for a brief description of the Puss Moth.

Close

They are toxic caterpillars that resemble a tuft of cotton or fur with color varying from yellow to gray to reddish brown.

Puss moth caterpillars live in shade trees and shrubbery around homes and schools and in parks.

When a puss moth caterpillar press against the skin, hairs become embedded in the skin and these can cause significant reactions.

These reactions include severe throbbing pain, burning, and a rash with red spots.

Treatments for the skin reactions may include putting tape on the site and pulling it off to remove the embedded hairs.

Is it a Spider bite?

Most spider bites produce a harmless itch or stinging that goes away in a day or two.
Pharmacist

But brown spiders (e.g., violin, fiddleback, brown recluse) and widow spiders (black widow) can be very dangerous.

Let's see what we can come up with.

Ask the child:
When the bite occurred, did you feel a sharp, stinging pain like a pinprick?
Pharmacist

Yes?

Are there 2 puncture marks in the skin at the bite area?
Pharmacist

Seek urgent care or emergency room.
Pharmacist

Here is why:

  • Your child is more than likely looking at a black widow bite.

Discuss first aid response such as washing the area (wikihow). Wrap ice in a washcloth or similar material and place it on the bite area. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then off for 10 minutes. Repeat this process..(pubmed first aid)

Are you looking at something like a target-shaped area on the bite site?
Pharmacist

Yes?
This is a sign of a black widow spider bite.
Pharmacist

The center of a black widow bite may be light red, with a darker outer red ring. Know that some bites may only appear as faint red marks with a little swelling.

Is there a dull muscle pain spreading to other parts of the body from the bite area?
Pharmacist

Yes?
This is a symptom of a black widow spider bite.
Pharmacist

If the bite is on the upper body area, he or she may feel most of the pain in the chest area.

If on the child's lower body area, he or she will usually feel the pain in the abdominal region.

Those questions were to eliminate a black widow bite.
Pharmacist

According to the CDC, a bite from a black widow can be distinguished from other insect bites by the two puncture marks it makes in the skin.

The bite starts with a slight swelling and redness at the site. There is usually pain at the bite area which then spread to the chest, abdomen or the whole body.

If you suspect, this is the case, then seek urgent care for the child.

Else, let's continue and make sure it is not a brown recluse spider bite.

Are you looking at a reddish, round bite area with a fluid-filled blister in the center?

The fluid-filled blister in the center may appear whitish.

After the blister bursts, the area will form an ulcer that may be deeper into the tissue.

Seek urgent care or call the pediatrician.
Pharmacist

Here is why:

  • Looking at a possible brown recluse spider bite.

Nearest Clinic

Those were signs of a brown recluse spider bite.
Pharmacist

The bite of a brown recluse spider may have been painless initially, then:

  1. Started getting itchy,
  2. Now there is like a bull's eye on the bite site.
  3. This bull's eye may be red and slightly swollen.

Increasing pain over the next 2 to 8 hours which may become severe is also possible.

Close

This bull's eye becomes larger, fills with blood, ruptures and turn into an ulcer.

Most bites leave a little residual scarring but some can leave a large tissue defect, which may involve the muscle.

Take this seriously. Systemic effects such as fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, rash, seizures, hypotension, blood clots, blood cell destruction and kidney failure are possible and responsible for all reported deaths from brown spider.

Yes?
Possibly bed bugs biting the child.
Pharmacist

Is the child itching severely and the area has red bumps like pimples?

Or Pimple-like hives?
Pharmacist

Yes?
May be looking at chigger bites.
Pharmacist

Itching usually occur several hours after the chiggers attach to the skin.

A skin rash may appear on the parts of the body that were exposed to the sun. It may stop where the underwear meets the legs.

This is often a clue that the rash is due to chigger bites.

Was a tick logged on the skin and now a rash or fever?

Or flu-like symptoms?

Are you looking at red or pink bumps that are itchy, soft and pale?

Yes?
More than likely looking at mosquito bites.

Black widow. Seek emergency help!

Discuss the symptoms of black widow bite. (pubmed first aid)

You can identify one by a red pattern on the underside of the belly. It looks like an hourglass. They are usually found in places where debris has accumulated and undisturbed areas such as woodpiles, under eaves, fences, and also in outdoor toilets because of the flies. Next time you use an outdoor toilet, take care.

From what I read at the CDC website, a bite from a black widow can be distinguished from other insect bites by the two puncture marks it makes in the skin.

The bite starts with a slight swelling and redness at the site. There is usually pain at the bite area which then spreads to the chest, abdomen or the whole body.

Brown spider

This bull's eye becomes larger, fills with blood, ruptures, and turn into an ulcer

Most bites leave minimal residual scarring but some can leave a large tissue defect, which may involve muscle. Loxoscelism, a venom-induced systemic syndrome, may not be detected until 24 to 72 h after the bite and is uncommon. Systemic effects (e.g., fever, chills, nausea and vomiting, arthralgias, myalgias, generalized rash, seizures, hypotension, disseminated intra vascular coagulation, thrombocytopenia, hemolysis, renal failure) are responsible for all reported fatalities.
